1. Babylon is one of the most famous cities/nations of ancient Mesopotamia. The hanging gardens of Babylon are one of the ancient wonders of the world. That mythological Tower of Babel is so reminiscent of other ancient stories of man trying to reach beyond there capabilities. The dreams of the great king Nebuchadnezzar are all known throughout three of the worlds great religions. Babylon was the Greek name of the city written in the cuneiform script of the Babylonians, bab-ili, which means in Semitic, "the gate of god." The Hebrews called the country, as well as the city, Babel.

To look back at great civilizations takes some perspective as well as an ability to separate the natural tendency to view these times in our past as something less then where we are today. Each time, each place, each civilization has its own greatness and its own weakness. We all assume if these people were transported into our day they would be astounded by our technology and our modernism. But it just might be plausible they would laugh and shake their heads in dismay at what we have become.

Why are places like Babylon so important to present day living? Its two fold. To learn of the heights which mankind continually strives throughout history gives an understanding to have hope for the future. But it also warns us of the folly the immersion in decadence and the pursuit of luxury ultimately entails. These lessons are not just for nations, but also for individuals, for an individual is a nation in smallest form.
